Scientists inspire shoppers in Yeovil
A team of scientists and researchers from Imperial College London spent the weekend inspiring shoppers at Tesco Extra in Yeovil.
The new project entitled ‘Science in the Supermarket’ allowed visitors to make models of lungs to learn about air pollution and blow bubbles to learn about cells. Dr Higgins, from Crewkerne, brought together the team with an aim to inspire the next generation of scientists.
There is a national shortage of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-trained individuals – latest reports estimating there are 20-25k fewer engineering graduates and apprentices each year than needed.
Dr Higgins comments:
“Studying science and engineering opens so many doors for young people, and not just in becoming a scientist. I was lucky to have amazing teachers at school who inspired me, and I hope by bringing scientists to meet young people in Somerset, we can inspire the next generation.”

The project has created an interactive online map featuring places people can visit across the county with links to STEM subjects.
‘Science in the Supermarket’ is funded by Imperial’s Societal Engagement Seed Fund, which supports staff and students to pilot new types of engagement activity.
