Employers want STARS!
West Somerset College invited Young Enterprise to deliver a one-day Employability Skills Workshop to all Year 10 pupils as part of a commitment to improving the career prospects of their students.
The workshop helped 14-15 year old pupils identify examples of when they have demonstrated the 8 universal employability skills:
- Communication
- Confidence
- Problem solving
- Initiative
- Organisation
- Financial capability
- Resilience
- Teamwork
If you have ever recruited new team members, you will be aware of how crucial it is for applicants to provide real-life examples of demonstrating desired attributes, rather than simply reeling off non-evidenced superlatives. Teaching students the ‘STAR’ template (Situation, Task, Action and Result) will give them a helping hand when applying for employment.
The students were also given an introduction to CV writing – a task many had never considered before, yet is so important to many throughout adult life.
We, along with Young Enterprise in Somerset, would like to thank all of the volunteer business mentors who kindly took time away from their busy schedules in order to educate and provide local students with a valuable experience.
Volunteers included Falcon Vehicle Hire, Job Centre Plus in Somerset, Cornerstone Mentoring and EDF Energy.
What next?
West Somerset College are hosting a mock-interview day for all Year 10 pupils on Wednesday 10th October. If you would like to volunteer, please email support@somerset-ebp.co.uk or call 01823 785440.
Young Enterprise's annual Company Programme is starting up again! Schools across the county form student teams tasked with developing their own enterprise. Local employers can get involved by volunteering as a business mentor, sponsoring a school to take part, supporting workshops, taking part in Dragons' Den, or judging entries at the Somerset finals.
