Congratulations Tes Schools Awards Winner 2018 - Brookside Academy, Street
Brookside Academy, in Street, has been presented not one, but two awards at the Tes Schools Awards 2018.
Somerset’s largest primary academy, with 600 children, has won Alternative Provision School of the year and the 2018 Community and Collaboration award.
At the heart of the school is a 30-place specialist provision offering education and year-round short-break care for children with complex and profound learning needs. Avalon school asked parents and carers in 2016 what should the school focus on to benefit their children most - the overwhelming response was preparing their young people for adulthood. Avalon’s focus, as a result, is on enabling all learners to develop skills for adult life: academic, personal and social, communication and independence skills, helping them find their place in the wider community and to be prepared for adulthood. Along with independent living, the school focuses on employment as an achievable, attainable and desired outcome for the majority of its students.
In addition to providing their pupils with an embedded careers programme, enterprise programmes and a work experience scheme, the school has provided training for 17 apprentices from the local area in teaching assistant, nursery, administrative and sports roles. As a result, Brookside featured in the national apprenticeship programme top 100 employer list for the past two years.
